I got a chance to play Killing Floor through Steam’s recent giveaways and free trials they have been doing for the few weeks. Anyone with a steam account can play full versions of these games for a limited time and just this last weekend I tried out Killing Floor for free. They also have a daily wish list giveaway going on through Christmas where if you have 10 games on your account’s wish list you are eligible for discounts on games and every day there is a different deal. Just last Sunday they had Left 4 Dead 2 for 5 dollars and a 4 pack of the game for only 15 dollars so you and all your friends could play online together. But anyways this weekend Killing Floor was free to play so I downloaded it.
It was not a big file and I downloaded it fairly quickly. My initial thought was that it was like Modern Warfare’s Nazi Zombies extra but it’s a stand-alone game. So basically there are these mutated zombie type enemies and they attack you in waves. You start off with only a pistol and they keep getting harder as you move along which has the same feel as the Nazi Zombies. You can run around and find different weapons in different areas as well. The first one I found other than ammo was a shotgun that worked very nicely when they got close because it was like one shot and boom they’re dead. Also Killing Floor does holiday specials where they unlock special maps and dress up the mutant zombies for the holidays. For Christmas they had all the mutants in Santa hats. It was pretty funny and interesting. I am really interested to see what they do for Halloween.
With this game another thing I like is there are many maps that you can play on. They give you like the creepy carnival and the hospital building. This game is basically what you have seen in the past in games like Modern Warfare’s Nazi Zombies but in its own designed package. So I got to say though if you really love Call of Duty’s Nazi Zombies like I do, then you will have fun with this game. It’s a survival-based game so it’s easier if you connect to online and play with other people but you also have the option of having your own game with just you in case you aren’t connected to the Internet. That’s what I was doing for a while because I hate figuring out a new game online and making my whole team fail because I’m still trying to figure out all the controls. But it wasn’t too bad in my own game I could survive for a while but I do play a lot of first person shooters. Once I was able to get onto the Internet and play online, it was a lot easier.
Now I’m not sure if the problem was with their servers, Steam’s servers, or just my internet (because I tether my 4g internet service through my phone to my computer) but I there were days where I would get pretty decent speeds but for a while I was not able to connect to any online game. However, once I finally got into an online game and started playing it was a lot of fun. Your friends can watch your back while you clear out mutated freaks ahead of you. Also, you can find different weapon dealers throughout the game that will sell you weapons and specialized weapons. As I mentioned before you start off with a pistol but you can buy double pistols or a shotgun from the arms dealer as well. I really liked the double pistols because you could pump out twice as many bullets and has a bit more range and accuracy compared to the shotgun. You can purchase Killing Floor right now on Steam for only 20 bucks and it will be on your Steam Cloud forever. Steam Cloud is basically your account backed up online so you can download your games on as many computers as you own and play them any time you want, however you can only be logged into one computer at a time.
There is also DLC’s available for this game as well. There are three different character packs for only 1.99 each. It’s not too bad if you really like the game and want to change it up. In case you didn’t catch this weekend’s free to play of Killing Floor I’d have say it’s not a bad game. Its Meta score is only at 72 and that’s pretty low compared to other games but I’m pretty sure that is why they had it free to play this weekend so that people can see that it is an actually quite fun game to play by yourself or with friends. And if you love Nazi zombies and want to play a game that is similar to that than this would be a great game for you especially because its only 20 dollars. But anyways if you’re a pc gamer and you don’t have a steam account you should defiantly make one because there is always free to play games and special weekend deals on steam that you really cannot get anywhere else. So I hope you like this game if you decide to purchase it for you or a friend I know I enjoyed it.
