Warhammer 40,000 – Space Marine starts off with an invasion on one of the critical planets that is strategically needed against the fight of the orks. It loads up a computer screen display indicating that losing this planet would be too high of a cost. The resulting of course of action is to send Ultramarines en route to stop the invasion and save the planet. You play as Captain Titus who is a well regarded Ultramarine. The main plot of the game for the first half is the Ultramarines taking back the planet from the rampaging ork invasion. You are accompanied by two other Ultramarines, Sidonus and Leandros, during most of the game who are literally impervious to any damage.  And with this three man team you take on endless hordes of orks and the head ork Warboss Grimskull. However, you will find there are some plot twists as you discover that orks aren’t the only things that have invaded.

I didn’t know what to really expect from this game because I never read, played, or watched anything from the Warhammer series. So I was coming into the storyline pretty blindly and just taking things as is. It is a 3rd person shooter with varying weapons and powerups. As an Ultramarine you are like the ultimate badass because you can take on hundreds upon hundreds of orks. They will either die by the amazing arsenal of weapons in your left hand or by the blade in your right hand. There are various guns that are pretty strong and useful for different situations. And this game does a good job with supplying ammo at key points even in hard mode.

The blade in your right hand is probably the most fun part of this game. You really feel like you are unbeatable with whichever blade you pick; you can pick between a chain sword, axe, or thor like hammer. In order regain HP you have to stun your enemy and execute them with your blade which is cool because it allows a badass cut scene where you tear the enemy apart. There are also combos that you can perform with each weapon which make it great for crowd control and stunning enemies. I personally like the hammer the best but you cant some weapons when you use it, so it has drawbacks. However, even though you may seem invincible when facing melee units, I think this game overpowers ranged units. It was just so easy to die to snipers even if they were lower tier shooters.

There are various audio logs you can find in hidden areas that let you into the whole story behind the invasion and carnage that was occurring. I don’t really understand what was the difference between collecting it and actually listening to it but listening to it allowed you to hear what happened. A lot of times I would just grab it for completion sake.

And there is a fury mode with your Ultramarine which is totally awesome. It regains your health and increasing your damage against opponents. And when you activate it, it acts as a AOE (Area of Effect) with a damage radius around you. Its really cool because there are just so many enemies that you need some kind of power up in order to face them all at once. It also helps with sniping as well when you are in fury mode by slowing down time and allowing you to perform critical shots to an enemy.

This game is just one amazing third person shooter that totally surprised me. I only played campaign but I totally enjoyed everything and it was great just to beat the crap out of some orks.
