EVGA Announces GTX 680 Mac Edition Video Card for Mac Pro
Mac Land is usually not a battlefield for competing products, as Apple usually only has parts that they sell under their umbrella, but in a recent twist of events we last week saw Sapphire release a video card that is geared toward Mac Pro’s and Hackintosh systems, the HD 7950 Mac Pro Edition. Now just a week later we see NVIDIA and EVGA following on the heels of that launch with a new GTX 680 Mac Edition that puts a serious dent in a market that has otherwise been ignored until now.
EVGA has announced that they will be releasing a GTX 680 for the Mac, and that in itself may not be the ground breaking news though. The real news I feel is in the fact that EVGA is not trying to completely strong arm the end user by charging an uber-premium price just because it has an Apple logo on the box. Now I am not stating that the price has not been increased, but the cost is not extortionate in comparison to a standard PC based version. We do see a price tag of $599.99, which is $100.00 more than their PC counterpart and that is probably going to Apple for licensing fees.
This card will hit the shelves next Monday and already pre-sales has sold many of these cards to an eager public. It is a very interesting turn of events to see Apple actually working with and allowing 3rd-party vendors to release cards for their aging Mac Pro market, but maybe this is compensation from them for not having a refresh for over 4 years on the Mac Pro lineup. If this does become the new trend it will make options for the end user open up like never before and allow upgraded to be made without breaking the bank or be forced into an Apple store just to get an upgrade. For NVIDIA fans this will probably be a really cool thing as now they can put their favorite NVIDIA card in their beloved Mac Pro system. I for one am looking forward to this as it opens up doors previously unavailable to us end users who happen to own a Mac Pro and would love to update the video card to a much better VGA solution. So what do you folks think? Is this a cool move by Apple, or just another ploy for your cash? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and thanks for reading Tech Of Tomorrow.
