For an upcoming Sotheby charity auction to help benefit Product (RED), Apple has designed a one of a kind, red Mac Pro. The radically red desktop was designed by Jony Ive, Vice President of Design over at Apple, and Marc Newson, another on the Apple Design Team.
Product(RED), styled as RED, is a global charity foundation aimed to help fight aids. RED is brand-licensed and is currently partnered with iconic companies such as Apple, Nike, and Starbucks.
According to the auction site, the value of this Mac Pro is estimated to be between $40,000 to $60,000. Like the rest of the custom-designed products on the auction site, it will be auctioned off on November 23rd. We’re not sure, however, if the crimson Mac Pro will be ready to ship to a lucky taker’s house on the 23rd because Apple isn’t ready to launch the Pro until December.
The exact specifications are not up on the auction site, but the standard Mac Pro has a base price of $2,999. The entry level Mac sports a 3.7GHz quad-core Intel Xeon E5 CPU, dual AMD FirePro D300 GPUs, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of PCIe-based flash storage. The higher end machine will rock a 3.5GHz 6-core Intel Xeon E5 CPU and starts at a pricier $3,999. Apple has also included additional configurations to the Pro allowing for an 8 or 12-core Xeon E5 CPU, AMD FirePro D700 GPUs, up to a whopping 64GB of RAM, and 1TB of the same PCIe-based flash storage.
In the past, Apple has paired up Product(RED) exclusively for their iPod line of devices. It is pretty awesome to see the two companies fight AIDS together with a Mac and is great for both of them. However, since it will cost up to $60,000, we better see the higher end components in this crimson-kick-ass beast.
