The Samsung Galaxy Gear SmartWatch is Real: What to Expect

Samsung is always shooting to be on the leading edge of technology and obviously slaughter their main competition, the iWorld of products that Apple has gobbled up market share with.

It seems that Samsung is expected to unleash a new “Smartwatch” with the name “Galaxy Gear” attached to it. This is rumored to happen by Germany’s IFA Trade show which begins in early September. A recent Bloomberg report ambiguously describes the new “Gear” to be able to make phone calls, but is not a phone unto itself alone as it can do much more. The main point of fact being made is that the “watch is not a phone.”

The term “WatchPhone” is a very new word and the definition of a true watchphone is a self-contained unit with its own SIM card, cellular radio, and data connection, rather than pairing to a smartphone over Bluetooth as rivals like Pebble do. That might sound far-fetched, but it’s not: in fact, Samsung has made smartwatches with built-in phones in the past, but they were never widely distributed around the world so many countries never saw them.

There are also a few questions that have been raised by Charles Zigler of the Verge about why even though there is a rise in the sharing of data plans makes the idea of using a dedicated SIM in the watch a more reasonable ideal, there are more practical obstacles that yet remain.

A few of those concerns voiced are the following: How do you talk without using a Bluetooth headset? How do you conserve the tiny battery? How do you make it small enough to look like a regular watch? Will the watch get heated enough to possibly burn your arm? Okay I made the last one up, but you do get the drift. In the current state of things it seems that Samsung will be the first major manufacturer to announce a smartwatch since Motorola’s 2011 MOTOACTV and Sony’s previous Smartwatch series of products.

These plans could all be foiled if companies like, Google, Apple or others who are reportedly working on this same new technology do the unprecedented and beat Samsung to the punch, but it seems Samsung will win the day in this market.  The idea of a phone in my watch sound kind of cool in some ways, but I think we need a wireless ear piece that goes with unit that also double as a mic, then that shiznit would be rocking. Thanks for reading folks, let us know your opinion and how or what you think would make this product a total winner?

I prefer Bluetooth and wearing a regular watch. I’ll put some effort into checking my phone that already does everything. Interesting though.
