Intel has recently announced that it will quit producing consumer motherboards after the production and development of its next CPU. The company has been in the consumer motherboard business for over 20 years, and now they are throwing in the towel in order to ramp up “critical areas of the desktop space” which include integration of innovative solutions for the PC ecosystem, reference design development, NUC, and other areas. Over the next three years Intel will be heavily closing down production of all its consumer motherboards.

They commented that this wasn’t a sign of Intel believing that desktops are doomed but one could probably assume that their line consumer motherboards were not generating enough profits. And I would have to agree with them on this one since I have never owned an Intel motherboard myself. It’s not that Intel doesn’t make good motherboards, they make great motherboards for numerous price ranges and builds. However, the other companies just market their motherboards better. Companies such as  Asus, Gigabyte, Asrock, and MSI make their boards with a little bit more style and extra features that give us consumers what we really want. Sometimes we want a heat-sink shaped like a gun in the Gigabyte G1 Killer Series boards or we want that military color scheme like the Asus Sabertooth boards or we just want that simple black on black feel with Asrock motherboards.

Regardless Intel is still one of the best chip manufacturers in the market so they should be able to focus much more resources into that department now and dominate even more so.
