MSI AMD R9 280X Twin Frozr Gaming OC 3GB Video Card Review & Benchmarks
AMD jumps back in the gaming ring. It’s that time again. Time...
For the hardcore desktop overclocker, a result of 5.0GHz may not be that high of a number, but for the common man 5.0GHZ is a really good overclock and something worth talking about. From what we have seen so far, Haswell will be one of the most interesting chips as far as overclocking goes and getting results is also a bit different as you will see in our overclocking reviews of Haswell with JJ from ASUS. We did a wee-bit of overclocking the Haswell ourselves and when release date comes and that NDA lifts we will have the real deal on the table. Until then its rumor central my amigos and all we can do is wait.
So what is today’s hype really about, well check this out: Tech Website Ocaholic.ch’s forums have a post regarding Haswell on an ASRock 787 Extreme motherboard running at 5505.83MHZ (5GHZ), but the best part is the low voltage they used to acquire this as the image show the voltage at 0.904V to achieve this. Now I know this sounds like really good news, but there is a bit of truth stretching going on here as the chip they used is a very special one and not all can achieve this, in fact from the information I have gathered from other reviewers and overclockers is that 4.6 to 4.7 is the average at that voltage and with an increase to 1.200v is actually need for stable overclocking at that speed. I do believe that 5.0GHz may be possible on some chips, but not at that voltage from what I have so far seen first hand.
Another thing to note and this to me makes the entire post seem questionable, is the fact that the person doing the overclocking had to disable Hyper Threading just to show that score, not to mention that we do not even know if the system was stable. It’s my job to report the news to you folks, but sometimes a story comes along that I just want to trash on and this is one of them. Hype can be a cool tool if used properly, but when the hype is based off some dudes post in a forum it has to be taken with a grain of salt. Haswell has shown itself to be a great overclocker; it has also shown that chips have a very wide margin when it comes to just how far they will go. 5.0GHZ will be a reality for many Haswell owners who take the time to properly cool down and give the CPU enough voltage to be stable as I have seen it happen, bit a 0.9V I don’t think so. Haswell is right around the corner and many rumors have surfaced. My question to all of you is this: What is the most important aspect of Haswell to you as a user and will you switch platforms when it is released due to those points? Thank always for reading Tech OF Tomorrow where your voice has a place in the comments below. Take care and Peace.
