NVIDIA Cutting Video Card Prices in October to Compete with AMD?

geforce-gtx-780-review

With every new launch one thing all users agree on is that dropping prices generates sales and for NVIDIA they make be just what the doctor ordered to help them keep selling in the wake of AMD’s new card launch. AMD has just announced their entire new card lineup the R7 and R9 series that will put a dent in NVIDIA’s sales and in an effort to combat that NVIDIA is rumored to be lowering their prices on many of their video cards.

This new rumor comes from tech site DigiTimes who claims to have sources in the industry that are saying this may become a reality in the near future. I have no problem believing it as that is a logical move for them in this situation.  A lot of the card that are being released from AMD seem to be just re-branded cards with only the R9 290X being the sole totally new card of the lineup and depending on how the cards actually do in testing will determine how determined NVIDIA is to lower the cost of their products.

NVIDIA as of now has the following four cards in their GeForce 700 series: The GTX 760, GTX 770, GTX 780 and GTX Titan, all priced more than $249, with older GeForce 600 cards still on the market for lower price segments. It’s possible that NVIDIA will release a new GK104 or GK106 based graphics cards for the $149-249 price segment, to compete with AMD’s Radeon R9 270X and R7 260X, but for now that is still up in the air.  NVDIA and AMD play off each other as the battle between them goes back and forth and on again, but at the end of the day that only helps the end-user get a better price.

NVIDIA is never one to just sit around on their laurels and await the bomb to drop so you know they will have something up their sleeve to keep them competitive in the sales game. NVIDIA has already been rumored to be working on 2 new cards as you read this article. NVIDA has already leaked that they will have a dual-GPU card based on GK110 cores, with a proposed nomenclature of the GeForce GTX 790. The GK110 silicon has also yet to be fully ‘unlocked’, with the GTX Titan using 2,688 of 2,880 CUDA cores on the die, meaning theirs is always room for a new high-end single-CPU card. As the holiday season is right around the corner it will be interesting to see how this all plays out, but lowering their prices can never be a bad thing for us so lets keep our fingers crossed. I still see AMD coming out on top in this one.

    • fa

It’s hard to tell! I’m excited!!!!

      • Alex Lee

        I agree with you!

        • Tifel Malti

          Me 2

          • Daniel Shestopalov

            Also! :3

    • Christopher Burgos

      I don’t.

    • Chris Jones

You like disappointments in life I see.

    • g0ggy

How can you see that without actual benchmarks?

FFS everyone is either saying “Nvidia cards will still outperform” or “AMD will kick Nvidia’s butt”.

How can you even tell that without clear comparisons?!

      • Aŋŏnyṁoṹs Ħaķĉeŗ

Actually, there were some Benchmark leaks and most of the time, the R9-290X performed 10% better than Nvidia and since it’s only 700 bucks and there’s the new Mantle API which offers console level optimization, I’m pretty sure there’s going to be some strong competition this year.

        • g0ggy

Are you seriously going to believe some random “leaked” benchmarks and buy a product according to them, especially when it’s going to cost you over 700 bucks? I sure as hell won’t. I also remember that those benchmarks were done on a really weird resolution.

You can believe what you want. I will wait until some trustworthy review sites are going to release their benchmarks for the new AMD series. Until then everything that is being said right now is completely pointless.

        • Fiberton

Mantle is what will crush Nvidia. When 3DFX hit the scene I remember same thing happen. They used glide and locked Nvidia and ATI out.. taking a huge portion of the 3d card market.

    • tzaar0723

Who cares who comes out on top? The competition between them benefits anyone who’s in the market for a new card.

      • Alan Moore

I completely agree i have always owned a nvidia card but now these new AMD ones give me a reason to wait on my next purchase

    • jade cereno

With all the stuff they have now i think they can. its just a matter of knowing what their r9 290x will do

  • Shahriar Sabri

    -_- I just bought a 760 a few weeks ago..

    • DavId Valladares

You probably should have kept up with the industry, the new AMD GPUs were known about for a while. This is nothing unexpected.

    • Christopher Burgos

for price its still a great buy. I wouldn’t look too much into spending your money on one of these cards, amd always falls short somewhere.

      • Matthew Caudill

        and precious Nvidia doesnt?

        • Christopher Burgos

say where? my drivers work great for all my games, hardware and temps intact. EVGA is a great brand, don’t see them touching anything amd.

          • Voodoo. COME BACK.

So as Sapphire (EVGA’s counterpart) :3

    • Fiberton

I would have waited because if the card numbers are badass running on mantle in crysis, BF4 and a ton of other games then AMD will have a 2 to 3 year lead on Nvidia constantly. Meaning their card will have to compete against AMD in the same game without having the performance of Mantle. I remember so clearly when all the buzz was the voodoo. 3DFX cards had such horsepower. They blew everything on the market away… Low Level API pwnage. GLQuake was a whole other area of awesomeness. Damn I am getting old. That is when computers made people excited. I have not been excited for awhile..but I watched the AMD webcast and Mantle shook me to the core. I remember what that kind of API can do. The awesome sound on the video card is quite cool. I decided to buy a ton of AMD stock when I heard about the xbox, ps4, nintendo deal. I am up like 30%. We shall see how they do though. It surely is a good story and the competition needs a shit in the paradigm. Just think of AMD really does get it stuff in order and starts taking market share from everyone…Nvidia and Intel will drop prices so fast we all will benefit.

  • THE ULTIMATE FAN BOY OF TOT

I dont care who care whose card is cooler. Give me the damn performance rating AMD not some stupid leaked specs!

  • crazysymbols

I only have a 650, if they cut it right, I might get a 770/780 for my next card instead of an R9-280X

  • Jetman

    4th paragraph says Single-CPU Card. :3

    • James Edmonds

First one says “dropping prices generates sales and for NVIDIA they MAKE be just what the doctor ordered”

Me thinks elric was tired when he wrote this…

      • Fiberton

Being that Nvidia will not be able to use Mantle…when the BF4 on mantle numbers come out. Things will be interesting.

  • Greatgamer34

i love when companies battle with prices like this, the consumer always wins!!!!!

  • Alex Lee

Lower the price of the Titan please!

  • KingNiglet

Looks like planning my new build after october will be a good thing then

  • NVIDIArocksAMDsucks

    NVIDIA rocks!!! AMD sucks!!!!

    • Yannick Letourneau

if AMD was not thear GPU will coast a tons of money. so never say tha a compatitor suck because if thea was not thear you will have to pay the double for yor GPU.

      • Fiberton

At one point INTEL did almost nothing. They wait milking the public while holding back their latest and greatest.

  • anthony

JUST PLEASE LET US WHO HAVE BOUGHT THE NEW 700 SERIES CARDS GET BETTER FREE GAMES SINCE BAT MAN SUCKS!!!

  • Jose Carlos

nvidia geforce 800 series????? maybe not maybe yes

  • Nvidia♥AMD♥

Can someone help me please? I want to buy a GTX 770. But if they come with new, way better cards, should i wait or just buy it? Friends said to me, that Computerperfomance is the double in only 18 months. So what is when i buy a GTX 770 now for 350$/€, and some months later there’s a graphics card that is WAY BETTER and for the same price or less?

    • g0ggy

Wait for the GTX 770 prices to drop and then buy one. In all honesty, there are only a handful of games that will really make your 770 work if you buy one. Who needs that much graphical processing power if there are no games to use them?

You can ALWAYS wait for a new generation. After the GTX 700 series there will be a 800 series and after that a refined 800 series that is going to be the 900 series. Oh, and what’s that? A new AMD series of R9 3xx cards as well!

      • Nvidia♥AMD♥

        Okay thanks dude :D

So when do you think will the price drop? I guess… in the next 4 months?

        • g0ggy

Much earlier. If Nvidia is clever they will do it before the release of the AMD cards, but I think they will wait and see what these cards can or can’t do first.

Probably 2-3 weeks from now? I am not sure, but if I was Nvidia I wouldn’t wait too long, otherwise people will just buy the new AMD cards.

          • Nvidia♥AMD♥

Yeah you’re right… Okay, thanks for your answers dude, i really appreciate it! Thank you! :D

          • g0ggy

Not a problem, but bear in mind those are just my assumptions. Things might turn out different.

        • Fiberton

2 weeks or less 290x comes out.. maybe its thursday ..let us hope.

      • Fiberton

I would not buy a Nvidia card right now or any card. I would wait.

  • shag

I might just invest in this iteration if the price is right and Bob Barker does a remake of dirty harry.

  • Mark Malloy

Nvidia you should just focus on getting your Maxwell line of GPU’s ready for christmas or Q1 2014!

    • Nvidia♥AMD♥

Should i wait with buying a GTX 770 and wait for the new Maxwell Architecture?

  • cristiano PT

amd, always was friendly to the costumer, and ractional on prices/performance and actually i just dont buy anithing else that is not amd,and i build some pcs for friends and stuff and they are completly happy with their amd plataform without spending ridiculous amount of money with intel and nvidia so….. fuck them!!!! And welcome new r9 but i will remain my asus matrix hd 7970 platinum :)

  • CatDealer89

Im not upgrading untill Nvidia comes out with the 8 Series!

  • JakFudo

So should I wait on getting my 780? I was gonna order it in the next week

  • tikilord

i have a 560ti (nvida most buggy gfx card, wont agree with any update) So i know if the price is right im hopping right to a $760

  • David Padilla

Guess who wins? Me, you, and everyone else.

  • The Jackal

And i’m still sitting here, running my GTX550TI, 600 dollars in hand. Patiently waiting for prices to go down…

    • Fiberton

      290x :)

  • Justin G

I’m not entirely sure if we would see a price drop per say.. cause that would definitely aggravate a recent purchaser of a GTX card..although I would more than happy to see it happen since I intend on buying one in the very near future..instead i think they will be going somewhere around the ball park of what AMD did… which is add more value to the product by bundling it with some nifty add ons (games in AMD’s example).. in which case i wouldn’t be so disappointed either..
