Battlefield 3 Performance Benchmarks

How does it play Battlefield 3? That seems to be the number one question we’re asked when a new video card hits the market and to put it simply, the GTX 780 runs Battlefield 3 damn well.

We ran everything maxed out on ‘Ultra’ settings, testing both 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and 2560 x 1440 (1440p) resolutions. In terms of 1080p performance, the GTX 780 pumped out an impressive average of 90 frames per second, which was 22 frames per second faster than it’s predecessor, the GTX 680 which put out an average of 68 frames per second.

Jumping up beyond 1080p, running everything at 1440p, the GTX 780 did not disappoint either with an average of 58 frames per second compared to 44 frames per second on the GTX 680. Surprisingly, it also held it’s own very well against the GTX Titan considering the price difference and as expected, it beat out AMD’s 7970GHz edition by quite a bit. Full performance charts for both 1080 and 1440p can be seen below, as well video gameplay of Battlefield 3 running at 2560 x 1440.

  • Maybe.

Max temp 78 degrees?! This thing rungs HOT!

    • Webuild

That isn’t really that hot. When my card plays Bad Company 2 it runs around 95*C depending how long I am playing.

    • Joey Gad

lol my 480 hit 100C once when i was playing bf3

    • ClamBumped

wow your houses must be hot 60C MAX on my 460 and my 660ti Superclocked (1245Mhz Core)

  • Dean

I was thinking of upgrading from a HD6970 to a Nvidia 780 card, so i could the 3D on my 120Hz monitor and use the very sexy PhysX and whilst after this review i defiantly would love to grab one, but the increased price puts me of and because im in the UK it would be a lot more expensive. If its over £550 for the reference card i dont think i will get it and wait for a price drop (or maybe even a TITAN 2 or similare card) but overall, it is one card i will be keeping an eye on!

I think you should add big “Next page” button, these small numbers should still stay thou.

Theres should be an index. :3

“AMD’s lack of competition”??? the 7950boost overall performance is on par with a 680, the 7970GHz is way better than the 680… and let’s not talk about OC capabilities where amd cards go even higher than the nvidia cards… the only nvidia card that was more powerful than AMDs is the titan, a $1000 card, no thanks… anyway, and besides that comment you made, this was an excellent review Elric. Keep it up man.

    • Vin

No, they have no cards to compete with the GTX 780 in terms of performance. So there is a lack of competition.

      • Moinaldo

That’s something that is obvious… it’s the new Nvidia card… if you had taken 2 minutes to read the review, you would have known we all were talking about the competition between AMD7xxx and Nvidia6xx. Try again.

        • RaptorJesus

          Who is ‘we’

          • Moinaldo

The people that actually read the review.

      • Gareth

They don’t have a card yet. The 780 is in the next series of Nvidia cards, AMD hasn’t even broke into the 8xxx or 9xxx series yet. I say 9xxx because they may skip 8xxx due to the desktop graphics they support for laptops etc. You are comparing AMD’s 7xxx series with Nvidia’s new 780. That is ridiculous.

        • GOM3RPLY3R

You think its ridiculous? Jumping over to CPUs, whats the difference if I compare the FX-8350 to an i5-3570k and an i7-3770k? The i7 obviously is much better than the i5, meanwhile, people still compare it. Plus it doesn’t really matter, it IS a better card, you can’t deny that. I can say that the 7970 Ghz and 680 are about on par, but anything more, usually beats it. Also it really depends on what games you play.

          • Gareth

Im not saying you’re wrong, there is nothing wrong with comparing them. All I am saying is people shouldn’t make statements like ‘So there is a lack of competition’. When clearly AMD will release a card that is up to competition in good time.

  • Nikola

7970 costs 300-350 dollars so im supposed to give 300 Dollars for 15 Frames more or less. Are you kidding me Nvidia? I could buy another 7970 for that money and put it in CF making it the same performance for the same money.I’m probably guessing AMD won’t stand for this long and reveal their new lineup even tho they said previously that they won’t.

    • nashathedog

And then what stutter your way through a game, great idea. I just bought a 7950 today to replace my 7850 so don’t try saying I’m on anyones side. For now the facts are the 780 does great and AMD’s X-fire is not a valid alternative. If it was I’d of x-fired long ago. I’m probally going to get one of these in a month or two, I’ll see what some aftermarket models are like first.

      • Nikola

AMD Announced they will be releasing beta drivers that fix the stuttering a lot. Dunno when, but im saying.

        • nashathedog

They’ve been promising that for a long time, Hopefully now they’ve released the 7990 they’ll actually do the r&d needed to do that. There’s a u-tube vid with a side by side of the current beta drivers and a new prototype driver running the 7990 and it did look a lot better so I hope they do get the problem solved. Seeing the 780′s abilities makes me look forward to the next gen AMD, Obviously there gonna try to top it in terms of performance and I can’t wait to see what’s on offer then. But till then (at least) this 780 earns it’s position on the board especially considering how much of the Titan’s lead it eat’s into.

  • Phil

Would you guys prefer a Gtx 780 or 2x Gtx 680 SLI?

    • Elric Phares

      I prefer a single 780

  • Billy CT

This is another waste of money from nVidia. 9970 here I come.

  • Ryan Terribile

Am I the only one extremely underwhelmed by this card? $200 extra for around 10-15 more FPS? Maybe it would be justified if the 680 or 7970 actually struggled at any games, but they don’t.

    • erik seja

Maybe not at 1080p but at 1440 and above, this card is a welcome relief.

  • Plumppuppyfilms Owner

Can this be used in a Hackint0sh?

    • Elric Phares

Not Yet, but soon a patch will come out for it.

  • jimbo

Editors choice 2012? Thought it was 2013…lol

  • Tim

Any way you guys could add a drop down bar with the “continue reading” names so you could just jump to exactly what you wants to know?

  • http://www.facebook.com/josh.peet1 Josh Peet

    Good review

  • Kaiser Kim

I don’t know what you guys are really whining about.
The card is awesome for 1440p+ gaming. See the benchmarks and framerates on this card when playing games on 1440p.

And, when you do an SLI of the 780′s, it’s extremely better than the 680′s on SLI.
This card performs the best on higher resolutions/multiple monitor gaming. You can really see it shine.
Like Elric said on the video.. If you are just doing 1080p gaming.. Then there really isn’t a point to upgrade. That’s true. But, if you are using multiple monitors. You’ll see a difference.

Great article Eric, god I would love one of those

  • John Riddle

So I had a thought after seeing the new price of the GTX 780. My thought was that Nvidia release the Titan just so they would have a reason to increase the prices of their new video cards. What do you all think?

  • Bluestick

ok gtx 780 is going to compare to 8970, not the 7970, so lets just wait and see what happends, i like both brands, prolly the 780 is my fav card now, but we got to wait for the amd 8 series cards so we can say something

  • Destromath

I’m safe for a while, since my PC’s sporting a Six way SLI GTX TITAN. And 2 Asus VG248QE. So I’m covered as far as graphics go, for another year or so.

    • David King

You can only get Titans in 4-way. Nice try :L

  • Alan Marin

    woohoo

  • Serg Ospishev

    Thanks
