In a recent interview with Games Industry, Shuehei Yoshida, the head of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, confirmed that the PS3 will be seeing continued support from Sony in the coming years.
Sony has been known to support two separate generations of systems for longer than most, with the recent example being that the PS2 saw direct support from Sony 5 years into the PS3’s life time. Yoshida stated that it wouldn’t likely be for the same period of time as the PS2 had, but as of right now Sony is planning to continue releasing games on the PS3, with a heavy emphasis on digital titles that will be made available across all of their current platforms.
Part of the reason for this according to Yoshida is “”There’s always a group of consumers who come late in the cycle, people who wait for the price to come down. We’re expanding geographically as well. The demand from Latin America, for example, is really really strong for PS3.” While we shouldn’t be expecting as many big franchises to thrive on the PS3 according to Yoshida, there will still be plenty of indie games to look forward to
“Our large teams are shifting, transitioning from PS3 to PS4, and continuing on Vita as well. But for our digital releases, we always look at PS4, PS3 and Vita. Many games like Hohokum or Doki Doki Universe we have announced for PS3 and PS4 at the same time. We’ll continue to support PS3 in a way that makes sense, especially the digital games that we work on – but our large teams, our AAA release teams, are transitioning from PS3 to PS4.”
PS2 saw a lot of strong titles come out even in it’s later years after the PS3 was released, and while Sony’s own big name teams may not be working on it, continued support from them means a lot of third parties will still develop for it as well. So those of you already owning a PS3 and not yet ready to make the jump to next gen should still be able to look forward to upcoming releases, and even those of you that have yet to own one might just find it to be a great time to finally get one once a good price drop occurs post PS4 launch. Let us know what you guys think in the comments, whether or not it’s a good idea to continue support on a previous gen console, or if people should even consider getting one this late into the cycle. Thank you for your comments and as always thanks for reading Tech of Tomorrow.
