This morning, Valve has announced their what is to be their next and one of their biggest steps towards making Steam into a living room focused gaming device: Their own operating system “SteamOS”. SteamOS will be based upon Linux with an emphasis on being used solely for enhancing the gaming experience as much as possible, and is designed specifically for use in Living Room PCs.

According to Valve’s announcement: “In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and we’re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level. Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases”.

This announcement comes with further details on 4 other features/services Steam will be incorporating, including In-home streaming that will allow your PC or mac to directly stream games to a SteamOS machine, new media services including music and film, their previously announced Family Sharing that allows multiple users to share the same account and game access with individual achievements and progress, and last but not least new Parental control options.

The lead goal of all this of course is for creating a pure gaming machine for big screen TV use, allowing PC gaming to not just simply gain access to the living room, but push performance to as high as possible while doing so. SteamOS will be free for download “soon” and steam promises to bring even more details in the coming days.

This is the greatest thing I have ever heard. I could use Linux and Steam OS; Linux for everything but gaming and Steam OS to play games. I think I’m going to cry, this is the best news ever.

remove/uninstall Windows update KB971033 and hide it from windows update. After use Winloader by DAZ to hack/activate.

    • Matthew Caudill

Who the hell pays ANY $ for OS’s these days anyways? 200? HA! Such a joke…. IM with ya on Fu{K MS, But too many “stuffs” out to pay for shit. Bout time someone do something to take market shares from MS/WIN Platform. You all think they’re gonna do this and not make it interchangable? wrong…

I hope that all games through steam work on this and not just the ones that have linux support. It would still be awesome but have less impact knowing that we would still need windows to play certain titles and it would be very annoying to have to switch between the two.

  • BOOCHOOBIES

    This will be awesome!!!!

  • Matt

“Their” three times in the first sentence.. really guys?

      ???

this will kill xbox and ps

    • Kiltedbear

No it won’t. It is very easy to port games between Xbox 1/360 and Windows because it is VERY compatible. Even PS4. These are only going to play Linux compatible games, period. They are going to have an uphill battle trying to get game companies to port Linux compatible versions, especially when Steam is considered a discount gaming gateway. Sure they get the new hot games and give preorders, but the majority of games that get on there go there to eek out that very last value of the IP, because they have already had their runs, hence the midweek, weekend and holiday special sales. This isn’t going to be groundbreaking unless they get development houses to design with Linux in mind and I wouldn’t hold my breath. Big Picture is a much better solution for this. This is just their attempt to get OFF of the Windows platform and they don’t like the restrictions Google puts on Play applications.

because you obviously understand how architectures work, same kernel does not mean simple porting, but all the next gen consoles and anything on the PC will be using x86, which means that in the next gen games should be easier to port between them. I just cant fathom how uneducated some people are about a subject there going to comment on.

“and is designed specifically for use in
Living Room PCs.” Lost me right there…

  • Bubba Jenkins

None of my games will be supported as they are all AAA multiplats and only a few indie titles and source games on on linux. Sorry, I’m not going to conoslize my gaming computer for this crap. Vale can eat a bag of d!cks if it thinks this will replace windows. There is a reason it has remained top in market share, because it works. Linux blows.

    • crazysymbols

Linux is brilliant, just not for gaming.

      • Kiltedbear

The point is that only Linux compatible games will play on it. Do you think game companies are going to go out of their way for this? Not bloody likely!

        • Jamie Williams

ummmm there are quite a lot of triple a titles on it already, i mean do you currently use steam on Linux cause i do and quite a lot of big games are on it, we have games like metro 2033 and last light is coming soon, cause developers are rushing to port all there games

        • crazysymbols

There are currently around 440 games on steam for the Linux OS, increasing all the time. But Steam OS boasts “Thousands of games, millions of users. Everything you love about Steam. Available soon as a free operating system designed for the TV and living room.” I’m not sure how accurate the claim of “Thousands of games” is, but if it’s not in the thousands then it is false advertisement.

might get it when it comes out before building my pc
