This morning Rockstar decided to randomly grace us, as is their usual method, with a new trailer for GTA V that further details and shows the new gameplay mechanics for the game, and the most concise, graceful way I can put it is “Holy Shit”.

Rockstar has taken an already successful formula of Open world free roam gaming, and has expanded it to a whole new level thanks to new ways to interact with the world around you, and multiple eyes to view it from. As we already knew there are three different characters to play as opposed to the usual one, and each of them not only has their own unique personality but lifestyle as well.

Players will not only be able to switch between them during missions to accomplish different goals like pilot a helicopter or provide support sniping, but can also guide each character through their daily lives, deciding what to spend their ill gotten money on whether it be the traditional options of cars and clothes, or newer options like investing in real estate or the stock market.

Gameplay overall looks to have received some major upgrades, while the complete appearance controls of San Andreas have yet to make a return, characters do have individual stats that can be upgraded with activities, like biking to increase stamina. There’s absolutely astounding number of side activies shown in the trailer, which are hopefully only a portion of even more to come, including base jumping, biking, golfing, tennis, hunting, and scuba diving in some absolutely gorgeous underwater settings.

It is at this point that GTA is looking to be evolving from being just an action game with an open world and activities, to a full free roam RPG taking place in a modern setting. While we only got a view of gunplay and driving without actually knowing how they control, it does appear as though things are a lot tighter, with more precise high speed driving and gunfights shown in the trailer than we’re normally accustomed to in the more often clunky yet charming previous entries.

To cap it all off, the trailer ended with a confirmation and short screen shot of what we were all wondering about, the game’s online mode, which appears to be in fact a full on MMO version of the single player game, showing numerous players running around the same city, and even piloting jets. While no full details have yet to be divulged, the little teaser alone is enough to make any GTA fan wonder about the possibilities of what can be done with that many players together in a single free roam environment. Normally I’m one for caution when it comes to getting excited over a trailer, but what we’ve seen from Rockstar before coupled with what this trailer has teased us has just made GTA V by far my most anticipated game for this holiday season, and one I hope will maintain their name of quality free roam action titles.
