Asus May Be Releasing a Cheaper Alternative to the NVIDIA Shield

It looks as though Asus might be developing it’s own portable game device in competition with the Nvidia Shield, according to a leak reported by Antutu. The leaked specs include an Nvidia Tegra clocked up to 1.91 Ghz, 2 GB of Ram and 8GB of storage, a screen with a native resolution of 1280×720, and it will supposedly run off of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

It isn’t entirely clear yet just what exact form the device will take, though being portable it’s likely to be similar to the Shield or take on a Tablet design. Compared to the Nvidia Shield it has similar performance power, but has only half the internal storage, with only about 6GB of it being actually useable meaning only a few Android games can be installed at a time.

Given this info, it’s likely that Asus is trying to create a cheaper, price wise competitive model, not something to replace the Shield but rather an option for those not looking to spend $249.99. We’ll report further if any new info gets officially announced/revealed. What do you guys think? Does the thought of ASUS jumping into this sound appealing to you? Let us know in the comments below!

And it will fail. No one gives a crap. The Shield is already a niche product AND it has it’s name made. Also, if this doesn’t support game streaming, it has a negative percent chance of making an impact. If it’s just for simple android gaming, get a Nexus 7, 10x the functionality and a better screen, and if you’re really tight on money… why buy this?? It’s a waste of the slave work you’ve been doing. If the ASUS supports streaming from AMD or Nvidia cards, then that’s different. But if it’s even MORE limited than the Shield, then it’s market will be no one. Not even a rich kid. Because a rich kid can give a damn about a brand like ASUS and a product less capable and cheaper than SHIELD.

Disappointed in the fact that there is a 720p screen, but from what I’m reading, they are probably aiming to produce a more budget based tablet or whatever form or shape it may be. Anyway, the only major ‘selling’ aspect of the NVIDIA Shield for me was the PC game streaming ability, as It was a quite interesting concept and worked surprisingly well, even through a wireless configuration. Let’s see what ASUS have to compete with that (that is if they have their sights to specifically compete against the NVIDIA Shield as this article infers)…

Yeah 1080p resolution would only draw more power and you wouldn’t really see the “BIG” difference in 720p compared to 1080p on that small screen.
On the other hand it’s just another android gaming console, just this is handheld :)
