SanDisk Launches Industry’s First Line of ULLtraDIMM SSDs

In today’s news SanDisk launches industry’s first line of ULLtraDIMM SSD products. So what is this, and what is it all about? Well we all know that SSD technology is fast and now SanDisc has taken the speed of the SSD and mounted it on a DIMM. So basically what you get is a DIMM populated by SSD flash memory that will help guarantee that your data gets to the CPU as fast as possible offering a well-wanted boost for the business platform. For those at the enterprise level this will be some serious fast and reliable memory pushing the technological bubble a bit further along.

The following statement is from John Scaramuzzo of SanDisk:

“The SanDisk ULLtraDIMM SSD was designed to expand the reach of ultra-low latency flash storage throughout the data center and scale to meet the requirements of any enterprise application, no matter how bandwidth or capacity intensive,” said John Scaramuzzo, senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Storage Solutions at SanDisk. “The ULLtraDIMM SSD’s linear performance scalability and innovative DIMM form factor allow organizations to deploy flash as their application requirements change, without requiring significant infrastructure investment.”

This is not a product for the meek or weak as this is a product for those who need to get their information to the CPU as fast as possible. In many business systems this is an important factor. All types of applications will benefit from this new technology, from Stock trading to visualization, VDI and others the new ULLtraDimm SSD will be a welcomed product. One thing that is also very nice is that these new DIMM-based SSDs allow for ultra dense server storage configurations as the modules can be added to existing server DIMM slots.  That in itself is great news as no new motherboard or other hardware modification needs to be implemented to use this new product.

IBM is said to be utilizing these new ULLtraDimm SSDs under their own eXFlash brand name and will be offered as an option in their X3850 and X3950 Servers. So far from the benchmarks ran by IBM show the eXFlash DIMM SSDs were able to achieve a write latency of 5-10 microseconds which is the lowest ever seen in the SSD storage industry. Using this new technology will allow for virtually instant access to all data stored on the ULLtraDIMM SSDs. This all sounds really awesome and will be a great thing to see the new ULLtraDIMMs in action once they are released. I am sure many companies will openly embrace this new technology in an effort to get the job done quicker on many levels. Thanks for reading Tech Of Tomorrow and have a great day!

That’s all great, but can we run Minecraft more smoothly with that?

    • Brandon Elbers

That was old years ago dude lol

    • SGT Smith

      lolz, minecraft is just crap

  • Rich

So technically speaking is looking forward to DDR4 pointless with this new stuff from SanDisk ?

    • Darko

Definitely not, DDR3 is faster but to be on the safe side I’d rather look at the benchmarks first when they ‘re released. Also DDR4 will be a lot faster than DDR3 unlike DDR3 being slightly faster or even slower than DDR2.

You serious dude? DD3 is “faster” then DDR2, absolutely sure of that.

        • Carlos

Ofcourse DDR3 is faster technology you stupid idiot.

This is basically the same thing as RAMdisk, the only thing different from the RAMdisk is that this has more memory and does not need an specialized software for it to work. Am I correct or have I overseen something?
