Blu Products isn’t exactly what would one would call a “household name.” However, the small, Florida-based smartphone manufacturer thinks it has what it takes to take over the smartphone industry by storm by knocking out high-end, well-known manufacturers, particularly Samsung. Samuel Ohev-Zion, CEO of Blu Products, says Blu’s vision for the smartphone is high-end, yet affordable, at a reassuring $299. So this week, the company unveiled the Blue Life Pro, it’s latest addition to its affordable smartphone lineup.
With the Life Pro, Blu says the gadget is “the line between vivid and incredibly thin.” The Life Pro is the “world’s thinnest 5-inch HD smartphone,” at a svelte 6.9mm thin. On the display side of things, the Life Pro is rocking a 5-inch panel with a resolution of 1280×720 making for a PPI of 293. Powering the device is a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and a single GB of RAM. It has 16GB of storage, a 2,500mAh battery (which allows for 12 hours of talk time and 416 hours of standby), and our usual set of 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth connections.
Those looking for LTE capabilities are out of luck here. It runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, with a light Blu-crafted skin over the OS, and comes with access to Google’s Play Store for games, apps, music, and more. It also has a rear-facing 12-megapixel camera sensor paired with a front-facing 5-megapixel camera. Both cameras have BSI sensors and support 1080p video recording. The device only comes in one color: black.
CEO of Blu Products, Samuel Ohev-Zion, said in a statement: “The Blu Life Pro is an accomplishment of engineering as much as one of design. Every detail and material, particularly the sleek aluminum enclosure, has been meticulously refined and considered. It’s made from a level of precision you would expect from a finely crafted watch, not a smartphone.”
And then there’s the price: $299 unlocked. This is a great price for what you get here with the Life Pro, even if it does lack LTE. It is going to head-to-head with Motorola’s flagship low-cost smartphone, the Moto G, which is on sale starting at a mind-blowing $179 off-contract. I’m excited to see so many low-cost smartphones coming out. They’re perfect for developing countries or people who want to get a smartphone for the first time or for their kids.
