About a year ago, Google acquired Motorola Mobility. We were itching for big things to come out of Motorola swiftly. We kept hearing rumors of a customizable smartphone from the Google-Motorola duo and it kept being rumored as the “Moto X Phone.” It took a while for this mysterious “X Phone” to become a reality and finally did this past August. Motorola is calling it the Moto X.

Motorola CEO, Dennis Woodside, stated in an interview recently that the company is shipping 100,000 Moto X smartphones per week. The phones are assembled in a factory based in Fort Worth, Texas. Woodside continued to mention that this factory is capable of producing “tens of millions” of the devices per year. However, he’s waiting for an increase in demand before expanding manufacturing.

The Moto X is a different kind of smartphone. It doesn’t feature top end 2013 specs, like the Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One. It takes a wildly different approach and focuses more about the user experience than high end specs. It runs a near stock version of Google Android, and you can expect that is something a lot of people will definitely appreciate.

I say “near stock” because Motorola has added a couple of neat software additions that it thinks will enhance the product and improve user experience. There are three main additions: Active Display, Touch-less Control, and Quick Capture. To put it briefly, Active Display is a new and innovative way of seeing notifications and replaces the old fashioned LED notification light that some other Android phones have.

The screen lights up and “breathes,” if you will, the notification occasionally and immediately turns on with the notification when you take it out of your pocket. Touch-less Control is basically an always listening Google Now. You can command Google Now without even turning on the phone and from anywhere on the phone. Lastly, Quick Capture lets you access the camera from anywhere with just two quick turns of the wrist.

Motorola has made the smartphone more appetizing to your tastes with Moto Maker (and well, Jelly Bean). Moto Maker lets you customize the colors of your phone with either a black or white front a and plethora of exclusive colors for the backside. You can even choose the color of the trim of the phone to make it even more “you.” This is a really unique feature that will give customers an experience that can’t get from any other phone on the market. The only bummer is that is exclusive to AT&T, but Verizon has said that they their customers will have access to it later this year.

Throw in a great form factor, decent camera, and a big 4.7 inch display, and you have a phone that will be able to compete with the mainstream market. This phone isn’t going after spec heads, it’s going for the average customer. The phone is certainly able to compete with other high end devices, such as the Galaxy S4, HTC One, Galaxy Note 3, and the just announced, iPhone 5s. Moto thinks that the gadget’s customizability and neat software additions will make it attractive for the normal consumer looking for a phone that will fit in their daily lives.
