Blackmagic outs Pocket Cinema & 4K 35mm Production Camera
This year at NAB, Blackmagic Design announced their consumer and production 4K cameras. The 4K production is somewhat of a full sized camera which is all operational by touchscreen. Obviously, the cameras main feature is the ability to shoot 4K with its Super 35mm-full frame sensor and has a dynamic range of 12 stops. It comes with the ability to put a SSD for media storage and also features global shutter. The camera will be available in July with a price point of $
3,995.
Blackmagic also released a more consumer based camera called the Pocket Cinema Camera. It’s a 1080p camera priced at $995 which features a Super 16mm-sized sensor and a micro 4/3 lens mount. It also has more of a dynamic range from its bigger brother, the 4K camera, at 13 stops. The camera is relatively small seeing as how powerful this camera is; the size is comparable to the size of the iPhone 5. The cameras images process to a traditional SD card.
For such a high price tag and the only great features being its compact size and high dynamic range, I don’t see any low-budget filmmakers going out and buying this camera. With the $995 price tag, you would think the camera would at least be able to shoot at many various frame rates like the very affordable GoPro cameras can at a outrageous 120fps but no, the Pocket Cinema Camera is only able to shoot at frame rates of 23.98 fps and 30 fps. Any videographers out there looking to buy this? Why or why not? Leave us a comment down below with your thoughts. Thanks guys!
