Hackers over at the Evasi0n team some big news for iOS 7 users. They say they have jailbroken the OS. The jailbreak will work on all iOS gadgets running versions 7.0 to 7.0.4.
A jailbroken iDevice will enable the operating system to side load applications outside the walled garden of Apple’s app store, but the most popular “other” app store, Cydia, is having some trouble on this jailbreak. In addition to sideloading apps, one can install themes and other cool mods. Cydia creator, Jay Freeman, tweeted that the variant of Cydia included in the jailbreak is unofficial and thus, untested.
The jailbreak will be compatible the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and iPad mini devices running iOS 7. The jailbreak process is fairly quick and simple and took about five minutes for iOS hacker, Weintraub, to complete on an iPhone 5S.
According to iOS fans on Reddit, this Evasi0n jailbreak comes preloaded with Taig, a Chinese cracked store. A large number of people in the jailbreak community are very upset about the inclusion, because Taig apparently sells pirate apps. One of the members of Evasi0n, pod2g, stated that they have no idea Taig distributed pirated software. The Evasi0n team then released a few words explaining how Taig approached them to form a partnership. This full statement is as follows: “In our agreement with Taig, we contractually bind them to not have piracy in their store. This was an extremely precondition of working with them. In entering the agreement with them, we had hoped, and continue to hope, that our cooperation with Taig will improve the piracy situation in China. We are very upset that despite our agreement and review by their team, piracy was found in the store. It was not acceptable and they have been strenousoously working to resolve the problem in good faith and have removed all instances of it that have we brought to their attention.”
As you can see, there has been lots of fishy behavior by the Evasi0n team. It’s very buggy, to say the least, and it may even be sending private user data to some random Chinese app store! So, if you are interested in jailbreaking your iOS 7-touting Apple device, I’d recommend you wait. I mean, a stable jailbreak will pop up eventually, right?
