Everyone by now knows that AMD has changed tactics and is now not only competing in areas they once scoffed at (the Mhz/GHz Wars) but they apparently also want to compete in the big boys sand box of high-priced processors.

The new AMD (Piledriver) FX-9590 is really the first ever CPU from AMD actually aimed at competing with Intel on even ground in a dollar for dollar comparison, as AMD is know as the bargain king. Now don’t take that the wrong way as by saying bargain, I do not mean junky I mean price appealing something some readers seem to misjudge at a given opportunity.

That could not be farther than the truth as for years I have plainly said the for pure gaming, AMD was a excellent choice as it does the job at a lower price than Intel. The thing is there has always been a trade off, AMD equals more heat and more power and less motherboard support than Intel, which is fine for some, but a no-go for others.

Overclocking has gone far beyond what I started doing back on my Amiga by just changing a few settings and away you go, as nowadays the extreme overclockers use extreme measures to get these results. I want to state clearly that although these dry-ice/liquid nitrogen garnish the best results I do not feel they represent the real world in any way as no user sits at his desk using his PC pouring dangerous liquid into a metal cup to keep their system running.

It’s just not feasible for anything other than bragging rights for the few minutes the CPU runs at these extreme settings before they fry and burn up, which is inevitably how all those overclocked CPUs usually end up, dead. Saying that though the new AMD FX-9590 is showing that it can compete in this arena with Intel, and that in and itself is a huge can of whoop-ass for AMD and I give them hats off just for that fact alone. For those who love the underdog to have its day in the sun, the AMD FX-9590 is basking in the glory of the 9590.

The standard overclock at 1.5v is 5.0GHz, which is also a feat worthy of mention as it’s a first for AMD that fans can shout out about. Another thing is that the new AMD A10 6800K APU is also breaking records of its own. We brought you a story a few weeks back about a Swede overclocker named “Stilt” who had already broken records and was maintaining the number one position on HWbot for the fastest CPU frequency for an A10-6800K.

This dude has managed to clock the 6800K at a whooping 8,203MHz or 8.2GHz that is also the 19th fastest frequency recordedd of any CPU to date regardless of maker. As you can see from Stilt’s CPU-Z screenshot, he had to crank up the vCore to 1.976V. He obviously has to use high-end cooling IE: liquid nitrogen to accomplish this record overclock. Other parts that contributed to the record overclock include a Radeon HD 7750 graphics card, Asus F2A85-V Pro motherboard, and 8GB of AMD RAM. All in all pretty impressive to say the least and it shows AMD if not beating Intel, they are at least competing with them in the extreme overclocking environment where speed is the king.
