Like I said in my opening statement the original DZ87KLT-75K that was sent for testing was inoperable and even though we usually test with Intel’s board this became unfeasible as the time ran out for any additional waiting and I had to switch off the another board just to make this review happen. ASUS provided a few boards for launch and one of the mainstream boards that have always appealed to me is the R.O.G series so I switched the board out for the Maximus V Hereo, which posted on the first try without error. We are using the Maximus V Extreme on our i7-3770K test system so its as close to apples to apples as its going to get until we get the Extreme board in, but very close indeed.
In-Win provided us with a nice X-Wing test station so we decided to go ahead and begin using with Haswell as you can see in the pics below. Our tests system is the Heinz-57 of test centers as it has components from a variety of companies. SilverStone provided the HELIGON HE01 CPU cooling and this was a very easy to install product and I know a big question everyone will have is will I need a new CPU for Haswell’s LGA 1150 cooler and the answer is no, all previous generation coolers that worked with Socket 1155,1156 and were multi-socket types will still work. That in itself is some good news though as at least something can be salvaged from your last build and save a little cash.
For the memory we used Kingston’s HyperX Beast that runs at 2133MHA in XMP mode 1. We used a combination of SSD and HDD in our setup as well as that is what you the users voted in as the choice of components we used. The BOOT drive is a 128GB SATA 6 SDD from ADATA and the media drive is the WD Caviar 1TB, which does work very well for a gaming setup. Rosewill provided the Fortress 750W power supply and we round things out with a Samsung 22X DVDRW. Our i7-3770K is the test system that we used in all our video test reviews for the last six months after our readers poll dictated what was the most requested and suggested parts that were affordable and feasible for great test bed. As far as installing the Haswell CPU into the motherboard it offered absolutely nothing different than previous generation CPUs offering a zero learning curve to accomplish.
