Samsung has just announced their new Exynos 5 Octa chip. Its based on the ARM Big.Little / Cortex A15 architecture which is designed to be a low powered, high performance mobile processor. Rather than a single eight-core chip, it has two quad-cores inside – one being a quad-core ARM Cortex A15 and the other a quad-core Cortex A7. The Cortex A15 can deal with the tough stuff but can also pass off the easy tasks to the Cortex A7, or they can both be used at the same time to really show off the performance. They claim it should easily handle HD streaming with no dropped frame rates and amazing picture quality. It was designed to support high-end smart phones and tablets in mind to be able to perform multiple applications without any loss of performance. Sadly Samsung hasn’t released information on when this amazing processor will be coming out.

Shouldn’t the new architecture consume less power and be more powerful than the old? Why not 2 x A15s is what I would want to know. I sure as heck would not put a pentium 4 with an i7 proc and call that good (maybe the difference is not that massive). Might even be better off with a dual core A15 with the quad since android isn’t that great, supposedly, with multiple cores to begin with.

I was thinking exactly the same thing, could pricing be a factor? Regardless I wouldn’t pass down the chance to say that my phone has eight cores.

Can’t say I am particularly familiar with ARM processors. Ah. Still confusing but their site says they are the same, but the a7 is more efficient with power… *shrug*

“The architecture and feature set of the Cortex-A7 processor are identical to the Cortex-A15 processor, with differences in the Cortex-A7 processor’s microarchitecture focused on providing optimum energy efficiency, enabling the two processors to operate in tandem in a big.LITTLE configuration to provide the ultimate combination of high-performance with ultra low power consumption.”
