TRON Mod System Build Log 3: Case Mods and Lighting
A lot of fans have been repeatedly asking about the “TRON” system...
Like any system build, we started gathering all the parts, getting everything together and preparing for the build before we actually ever put together a single piece. The thing was though, when we set out to do the TRON Mod we really had to figure out just what we could do to keep the theme of the movie, but without breaking any trade laws in the process. We were first going to go all out and try and use some imagery from the movie and really blatantly make it known it was based on TRON, but we could not get Disney to return our calls or email so we then decided to make it a TRON themed mod instead of the direct TRON theme we had originally set out and planned for.
The first thing we decided was on the case, its color and the case mods we would do to create the theme. We decided to stick with the classic blue/black/white colors used in the movie and in the posters/promotional side of things. Just painting the case is a bit of a chore, as you first must strip the case entirely of all its components and screws and anything that would get in the way of the paint job. After we did that it was off to the painters in our first interaction with a new painter that our in-house modder Anthony Reynolds found in Long Beach California. The guy is usually an automotive painter, but he took the time to paint our case in his professional booth and workspace.
Build log 1 as I am calling this article is really just about showing off that above mentioned case which we had painted a really beautiful metal flake white that when seen in the right light really looks pearlescent and classy as well as a very clean and elegant. The total prep time and execution took about a week’s total time from our shop to the painter and back. It is really hard to do the pictures justice in this light and I wish we had a better way to impart how well it looks in person. The mods so far will be custom lighting inside all the blue plastic and laser etched sides on the panels as we are starting on the outside of the case first and working our way in we assemble the TRON Mod. This is a work in progress and just the first of a series of 10 articles as we build and design the various mods we will be installing on this system, stay tuned as the TRON takes form.
