Since it’s launch back in 2005, Amazon Prime has maintained the same membership fee of $79 a year, but after 9 years that may change soon.

Amazon Prime has become something a lot more than just offering a free two day shipping option since it’s creation, and after a less than stellar past quarter Amazon is debating increasing it’s membership fee by $20 or even $40.

While the issue has been discussed amongst amazon employee’s and analysts, no particular timeline or plan has been stated yet as to how soon or quickly a move like this could take effect. CFO Thomas Szkutak has said that the potential rise in fees is more due to rising shipping costs and the sheer number of Amazon Prime members and not related to any of the newer additional services like Amazon Prime Streaming. At this point this is all just talk however, and Amazon is yet to give an official statement regarding how big the price change could be exactly, or when we can expect to see it happen.

I don’t use prime, so this really wouldn’t matter too much to me!

Quite possibly. This would make Best Buy and other local stores look a bit more inviting (Free 2 day shipping through Best Buy as well). Can’t really blame them tho, I know I use the hell out of my 2 day shipping.
