Since their near simultaneous release back in November, the PS4 and Xbox One have been battling out which console will dominate this newest cycle, and the numbers have not been kind to Microsoft. PS4’s have been outselling across the board, and Microsoft is in need of some strategic and marketing changes to swing things in their direction.
A user on Neogaf by the name of “ntkrnl” claims to be an inside source from Microsoft, and has “revealed” numerous plans the company has for the future of the Xbox One. While all of this can be dismissed as mere rumor, several of his statements and claims do line up with other recent rumors and news reports, and according to Kotaku it does look as though Microsoft is attempting to identify “ntkrnl” in order to take legal action against him/her.
Among the news included was new skin designs for the Xbox One including the white design originally only for development team members at Microsoft, and a special edition Titanfall design, which is entirely possible considering the Xbox 360’s history of special designs for every major console exclusive release including Halo and Gears of War games.
It was also claimed that a cheaper $399.99 model of the Xbox One may become available, though this wouldn’t be a straight price cut but rather a more affordable option by dropping the blu-ray drive, making it a digital game only system. It was also implied that some of these new designs, the special edition Titanfall model in particular, may include a 1TB hard drive as opposed to 500GB, though it’s unclear if this would be a permanent upgrade for new systems or simply a special bonus for the Titanfall edition.
It’s fairly common practice for consoles to receive newer models whether it’s an upgrade or just a cheaper option, but to see so much potential news for one so soon is a clear sign that Microsoft is trying to turn these early tides as quickly as possible. In the end the biggest thing as always with any system is strong console exclusive titles to pull people in, but a cheaper purchase price certainly doesn’t hurt.
